Biblical Health

This page is specially created for Christians interested in improving their health and finding out what the Bible has to say about it. After all, wouldn’t the Maker of our wonderful bodies know best about how we should be taking care of them? We will add more Scripture references over time.

We hope that visitors of other faiths will also benefit from this page.

If you would like to learn more about Biblical principles on health, we recommend that you get hold of the following books. Though not without minor flaws, they give an otherwise excellent treatment of the fascinating topic of Biblical health principles.

God Desires Us to be Healthy

3 John 2
2 Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers.

Psalm 103:2-5
2 Bless the LORD, O my soul,
And forget none of His benefits;
3 Who pardons all your iniquities,
Who heals all your diseases;
4 Who redeems your life from the pit,
Who crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion;
5 Who satisfies your years with good things,
So that your youth is renewed like the eagle.

Forgiveness and Obedience are Keys to Good Health

Exodus 15:25-26
25 Then he cried out to the LORD, and the LORD showed him a tree; and he threw it into the waters, and the waters became sweet. There He made for them a statute and regulation, and there He tested them.
26 And He said, "If you will give earnest heed to the voice of the LORD your God, and do what is right in His sight, and give ear to His commandments, and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have put on the Egyptians; for I, the LORD, am your healer."

{The tree represents the cross of Jesus Christ]

Proverbs 4:20-22
20 My son, give attention to my words; Incline your ear to my sayings.
21 Do not let them depart from your sight; Keep them in the midst of your heart.
22 For they are life to those who find them And health to all their body.

James 5:16-17
16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.
17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the earth for three years and six months.

It Pays to be Better Informed

Hosea 4:6a
6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.

Get Plenty of Pure, Fresh Air

Genesis 2:7
7 Then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.

Sunlight Every Day.

Genesis 1:14-18
14 Then God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years;
15 and let them be for lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth"; and it was so.
16 God made the two great lights, the greater light to govern the day, and the lesser light to govern the night; He made the stars also.
17 God placed them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth,
18 and to govern the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness; and God saw that it was good.

Ecclesiastes 11:7
7 The light is pleasant, and it is good for the eyes to see the sun.

Clear Link Between Nutrition and Health

Deuteronomy 7:13-15
13 "He will love you and bless you and multiply you; He will also bless the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground, your grain and your new wine and your oil, the increase of your herd and the young of your flock, in the land which He swore to your forefathers to give you.
14 "You shall be blessed above all peoples; there will be no male or female barren among you or among your cattle.
15 "The LORD will remove from you all sickness; and He will not put on you any of the harmful diseases of Egypt which you have known, but He will lay them on all who hate you.

Abstinence from Things Harmful.

Proverbs 20:1
1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, and whoever is intoxicated by it is not wise.
[Please note that the Bible doesn’t prohibit drinking but warns against drunkenness]

Temperance in All Things

1 Corinthians 6:12-13
12 All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything.
13 Food is for the stomach and the stomach is for food, but God will do away with both of them. Yet the body is not for immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord is for the body.

1 Corinthians 9:25
25 Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. They then do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable.

Sufficient Rest

Exodus 20:8-11
8 "Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
9 "Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
10 but the seventh day is a sabbath of the LORD your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or your female servant or your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you.
11 "For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day and made it holy.

Matthew 11:28-29
28 "Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.

29 Then God said, "Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you;

Genesis 9:3-4
3 "Every moving thing that is alive shall be food for you; I give all to you, as I gave the green plant.
4 "Only you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood.

Abstain from the Flesh of Unclean Animals

Leviticus 11
1 The LORD spoke again to Moses and to Aaron, saying to them,
2 "Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, 'These are the creatures which you may eat from all the animals that are on the earth.
3 'Whatever divides a hoof, thus making split hoofs, and chews the cud, among the animals, that you may eat.
4 'Nevertheless, you are not to eat of these, among those which chew the cud, or among those which divide the hoof: the camel, for though it chews cud, it does not divide the hoof, it is unclean to you.
5 'Likewise, the shaphan, for though it chews cud, it does not divide the hoof, it is unclean to you;
6 the rabbit also, for though it chews cud, it does not divide the hoof, it is unclean to you;
7 and the pig, for though it divides the hoof, thus making a split hoof, it does not chew cud, it is unclean to you.
8 'You shall not eat of their flesh nor touch their carcasses; they are unclean to you.
9 'These you may eat, whatever is in the water: all that have fins and scales, those in the water, in the seas or in the rivers, you may eat.
10 'But whatever is in the seas and in the rivers that does not have fins and scales among all the teeming life of the water, and among all the living creatures that are in the water, they are detestable things to you,
11 and they shall be abhorrent to you; you may not eat of their flesh, and their carcasses you shall detest.
12 'Whatever in the water does not have fins and scales is abhorrent to you.
13 'These, moreover, you shall detest among the birds; they are abhorrent, not to be eaten: the eagle and the vulture and the buzzard,
14 and the kite and the falcon in its kind,
15 every raven in its kind,
16 and the ostrich and the owl and the sea gull and the hawk in its kind,
17 and the little owl and the cormorant and the great owl,
18 and the white owl and the pelican and the carrion vulture,
19 and the stork, the heron in its kinds, and the hoopoe, and the bat.
20 'All the winged insects that walk on all fours are detestable to you.
21 'Yet these you may eat among all the winged insects which walk on all fours: those which have above their feet jointed legs with which to jump on the earth.
22 'These of them you may eat: the locust in its kinds, and the devastating locust in its kinds, and the cricket in its kinds, and the grasshopper in its kinds.
23 'But all other winged insects which are four-footed are detestable to you.
24 'By these, moreover, you will be made unclean: whoever touches their carcasses becomes unclean until evening,
25 and whoever picks up any of their carcasses shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening.
26 'Concerning all the animals which divide the hoof but do not make a split hoof, or which do not chew cud, they are unclean to you: whoever touches them becomes unclean.
27 'Also whatever walks on its paws, among all the creatures that walk on all fours, are unclean to you; whoever touches their carcasses becomes unclean until evening,
28 and the one who picks up their carcasses shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening; they are unclean to you.
29 'Now these are to you the unclean among the swarming things which swarm on the earth: the mole, and the mouse, and the great lizard in its kinds,
30 and the gecko, and the crocodile, and the lizard, and the sand reptile, and the chameleon.
31 'These are to you the unclean among all the swarming things; whoever touches them when they are dead becomes unclean until evening.
32 'Also anything on which one of them may fall when they are dead becomes unclean, including any wooden article, or clothing, or a skin, or a sack--any article of which use is made--it shall be put in the water and be unclean until evening, then it becomes clean.
33 'As for any earthenware vessel into which one of them may fall, whatever is in it becomes unclean and you shall break the vessel.
34 'Any of the food which may be eaten, on which water comes, shall become unclean, and any liquid which may be drunk in every vessel shall become unclean.
35 'Everything, moreover, on which part of their carcass may fall becomes unclean; an oven or a stove shall be smashed; they are unclean and shall continue as unclean to you.
36 'Nevertheless a spring or a cistern collecting water shall be clean, though the one who touches their carcass shall be unclean.
37 'If a part of their carcass falls on any seed for sowing which is to be sown, it is clean.
38 'Though if water is put on the seed and a part of their carcass falls on it, it is unclean to you.
39 'Also if one of the animals dies which you have for food, the one who touches its carcass becomes unclean until evening.
40 'He too, who eats some of its carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening, and the one who picks up its carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening.
41 'Now every swarming thing that swarms on the earth is detestable, not to be eaten.
42 'Whatever crawls on its belly, and whatever walks on all fours, whatever has many feet, in respect to every swarming thing that swarms on the earth, you shall not eat them, for they are detestable.
43 'Do not render yourselves detestable through any of the swarming things that swarm; and you shall not make yourselves unclean with them so that you become unclean.
44 'For I am the LORD your God. Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am holy. And you shall not make yourselves unclean with any of the swarming things that swarm on the earth.
45 'For I am the LORD who brought you up from the land of Egypt to be your God; thus you shall be holy, for I am holy.'"
46 This is the law regarding the animal and the bird, and every living thing that moves in the waters and everything that swarms on the earth,
47 to make a distinction between the unclean and the clean, and between the edible creature and the creature which is not to be eaten.

Use Plenty of Water Inside and Out; Eat Simply-Prepared Whole Foods; Get Enough Dietary Fiber from Fruits and Vegetables; Practice Regular Fasting

Daniel 1:11-15
11 But Daniel said to the overseer whom the commander of the officials had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah,
12 "Please test your servants for ten days, and let us be given some vegetables to eat and water to drink.
13 "Then let our appearance be observed in your presence and the appearance of the youths who are eating the king's choice food; and deal with your servants according to what you see."
14 So he listened to them in this matter and tested them for ten days.
15 At the end of ten days their appearance seemed better and they were fatter than all the youths who had been eating the king's choice food.

Matthew 6:17-18
17 "But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face
18 so that your fasting will not be noticed by men, but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.

2 in the middle of its street. On either side of the river was the tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit every month; and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

The Bible Supports Aromatherapy

Numbers 16:45-50
45 "Get away from among this congregation, that I may consume them instantly." Then they fell on their faces.
46 Moses said to Aaron, "Take your censer and put in it fire from the altar, and lay incense on it; then bring it quickly to the congregation and make atonement for them, for wrath has gone forth from the LORD, the plague has begun!"
47 Then Aaron took it as Moses had spoken, and ran into the midst of the assembly, for behold, the plague had begun among the people. So he put on the incense and made atonement for the people.
48 He took his stand between the dead and the living, so that the plague was checked.
49 But those who died by the plague were 14,700, besides those who died on account of Korah.
50 Then Aaron returned to Moses at the doorway of the tent of meeting, for the plague had been checked.

Mark 6:13
13 And they were casting out many demons and were anointing with oil many sick people and healing them.

James 5:14-15
14 Is anyone among you sick? Then he must call for the elders of the church and they are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord;
15 and the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him.

Trust in Divine Power.

Psalms 91:5-10
5 You will not be afraid of the terror by night,
Or of the arrow that flies by day;
6 Of the pestilence that stalks in darkness,
Or of the destruction that lays waste at noon.
7 A thousand may fall at your side
And ten thousand at your right hand,
But it shall not approach you.
8 You will only look on with your eyes
And see the recompense of the wicked.
9 For you have made the LORD, my refuge,
Even the Most High, your dwelling place.
10 No evil will befall you,
Nor will any plague come near your tent.

Proverbs 3:5-8
5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart

OUR STATEMENT OF FAITH

What We Believe: About God and His Work

  • We believe in God the Father, the Almighty, the Creator and Sustainer of Heaven and Earth.
  • We believe in Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, the Resurrected Savior and Lord.
  • We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Comforter.
  • We believe in the universal Christian Church made up of all believers.
  • We believe in the redemption, forgiveness and salvation provided in the Cross of Jesus Christ to all who will receive Him as Lord.
  • We believe that the Scriptures are the inspired Word of God and are worthy for matters of instruction in faith, belief and conduct. The Scriptures also teach practices available for health restoration and maintenance such as but not limited to prayer, diet, fasting, and laying on of hands.

What We Believe: About Man

  • We believe that we are created beings. By God we are created as body, soul and spirit and each part must be in harmony with God’s principles for optimum health.
  • We believe that we are called beings. We believe that we have a purpose and that man is called to a God ordained employment, to love and obey God, and to serve Him in whatever ways set before Him.
  • We believe that we are responsible beings. We believe that God has entrusted His Creation, including our bodies, into our care as His stewards and servants.
  • We believe that we are responsible for our own health. We believe that physical health is primarily a reflection of God’s Universal law of cause and effect. A man reaps what he sows. How we feed and care for our bodies does impact our health and the health of our offspring.
  • We believe that God can and, at times, does directly intervene. It could be either to heal or to afflict, but always according to His sovereign purpose.
  • We believe that Satan, our adversary, will do anything to destroy us. We believe in the existence of Satan and his demons, and have no doubt that he is out to use every means possible, including undermining our health, to disrupt and destroy the lives of those who seek to love and obey God.

What We Believe: About Health

  • We believe that physical health is an important factor toward effective service and worship. A body that is diseased or in ill repair has a diminished capacity for effective service and worship.
  • We believe that good health is built upon Biblical principals. In order to maintain good physical health one must consistently breathe clean air, drink pure water, eat health promoting food, exercise properly, and get adequate rest, as well as learn how to effectively handle stress.
  • We believe that health-promoting foods are primarily from the garden and secondarily from clean animals. A healthy diet is one that is balanced and centered on fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts and seeds, with dairy, fish, eggs, poultry and meat from clean animals rounding out the diet. In addition, these God given foods should be in forms closest to their original state and free of chemicals, hormones and antibiotics.
  • We believe that invasive health care measures are sometimes necessary. At times surgery and other invasive medical procedures may be necessary lifesaving measures. Such occurrences should be rare, but should also be preceded and followed by good health measures.
  • We believe that invasive measures do not heal. At the same time, we believe that healing only comes when the body’s own God-given protective mechanisms are restored.
  • We believe that spiritual health is of utmost importance. As important as physical health is, it is only a means to an end, not an end in itself. Man was created to love, obey and serve God. Of what profit is it to be well physically, and yet have neither peace with God nor a sense of His purpose for life? We believe that our role is to help the individual remove both physical and spiritual roadblocks to greater service in the world for Jesus Christ.
